    The central part features a left-facing profile portrait of the German humanist, theologian, and educator Philipp Melanchthon. Along the left edge of the coin is his name in German, 'Philipp Melanchton', and on the right are the years of his life '⁎1497+1560'.

    The center depicts the stylized national symbol of the Federal Republic of Germany: a heraldic eagle facing left.
