On the left, top, and right is the state name in French 'REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN' (Republic of Benin). The country's coat of arms is positioned in the central part. It consists of a quarterly heraldic shield: the upper left quarter features a castle, the upper right quarter the Star of Benin, the lower left quarter a palm tree, and the lower right quarter a sailing ship. The shield is supported by leopards and is topped by a crest composed of two twisted cornucopias filled with grain and sand. At the base of the coat of arms is the motto - 'Fraternity, Justice, Labor' (Fraternité, Justice, Travail). At the bottom, along the rim, is a two-line inscription in French – '500 FRANS CFA' (500 CFA Francs).
