To the left and right of the coat of arms, reed branches are crossed at the base of the state symbol. Below, the year of mintage – '1891'. Around the edge of the coin are decorative elements in the form of dentils.
  • Obverse
In the central part of the coin, the left-facing profile of King Leopold II of Belgium is struck. Along the arc of the coin's edge from left to right runs the text 'LEOP. II R. D. BELG. SOUV. DE L'ETAT INDEP. DU CONGO', which translates from French as 'Leopold II King of the Belgians Sovereign of the Independent State of the Congo'. Below the neck truncation – the author's mark of the Belgian medallist Leopold Wiener – 'L. WIENER'. Along the rim are elements in the form of dentils.
