    In the central part, a stylized depiction of the Brandenburg Gate, consisting of six columns on a granite base. At the top, on the capital, is a quadriga (chariot). It features a warrior holding a flag aloft. The chariot is drawn by four horses. Along the upper edge of the coin, from left to right, is the German inscription "HAUPTSTADT DER DDR", which translates literally as "Capital of the GDR". Along the lower edge of the coin is the inscription "BERLIN".

    In the central part is the coat of arms of the GDR. The coat of arms is a stylized depiction featuring a hammer and compass in the center. The image is surrounded by a wreath of cereal grain ears, intertwined with a wide ribbon on the left, bottom, and right. At the top is the letter "A" - the mint mark. Along the edge of the coin on the left, top, and right is the German inscription "DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK", which translates to "German Democratic Republic". Along the bottom rim is the German inscription "1986 5 mark". The numbers "1986" indicate the year of issue. "5 mark" translates to "5 marks".
