Near the left edge of the coin, a right-facing portrait of Hélène Dutrieu; to the right, stylized clouds above which is an airplane. Below the image, the pilot's name in French 'HÉLÈNE DUTRIEU'; above, the years of the fiftieth anniversary of her death '1961 - 2011'.

    In the central part within a dodecagon, a map of Europe, to the right of which a three-line inscription five euro 2011 '5 EURO 2011'. Along the rim, a raised border frame, inside which on the left, top, and right the country name 'Belgium' in three languages (Dutch BELGIE, French BELGIQUE, German BELGIEN). Between the names are marks: of the Royal Mint of Brussels - the head of Archangel Michael, and of the director - a Goose Quill. Below are twelve five-pointed stars, separated by a mark indicating a collector's issue 'qp'. At the lower right, crossed Latin letters 'LL' - the initials of the artist Luc Luycx.
