In the central part is the State Emblem of the Russian Empire — a double-headed eagle, its heads crowned with two crowns, a third, larger crown above them. On the eagle's breast is the Moscow coat of arms — an oval shield depicting St. George the Victorious slaying a dragon with a spear. Around the shield is the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called. In its right talon the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left an orb. Around the eagle are four cyphers of Paul I, arranged in a cross pattern and crowned with imperial crowns. Along the edge of the coin is a circular inscription: МОНЕТА РУБЛЬ 1796 ГОДА (COIN ROUBLE 1796 YEAR) divided into four parts by imperial crowns.
  • Obverse
In the central part is a profile bust of Emperor Alexander I facing right, of original design. In the truncation of the shoulder is the signature of the medalist 'CLF' — Karl Alexander Leberecht. In the lower part, below the portrait, is the abbreviation 'С П Б' (Saint Petersburg Mint). Around the portrait is the inscription: Б. М. ПАВЕЛЪ I. IМП ИСАМОД ВСЕРОСС (B. M. PAUL I. EMPEROR AND AUTOCRAT OF ALL RUSSIA).
