    The central part features the Notre Dame Gate in Birgu. The year of issue '1974' is on the right, and the denomination inscription '£M 4' is on the left.
  • Obverse
    The central part features the coat of arms of Malta from 1964-1975. It consists of a shield divided per pale with a cross in the corner, framed by palm and olive branches. Above the shield is a knight's helmet with torse and mural crown, below it an eight-pointed Maltese cross. Two dolphins support the shield on waves. The base bears the Latin motto 'Virtute et Constantia' (By Valour and Firmness). The country name 'MALTA' is inscribed along the lower edge of the coin.
