In the upper part, along the edge of the coin, is the text '1776 INDEPENDENCE 1976' - 200 years of independence. Below is a two-line inscription: 1 dollar Western Samoa '$1 WESTERN SAMOA'. Above the map is a five-pointed star.

    In the central part of the coin, the left-facing profile of Samoan Head of State Malietoa Tanumafili II and Sizifu is struck. Below the neck truncation are the medallist's initials: 'HP' - Thomas Humphrey Paget. In the lower part, along the edge of the coin, is the chief's name 'MALIETOA TANUMAFILI II'. Above - the year of independence from New Zealand and the year of minting - '1962 INDEPENDENCE 1976'. The inscriptions are separated by five-pointed stars.
