The central part depicts a burning, sinking ship with an airplane flying overhead - an episode from World War II. To the left, under the plane's tail, is a two-line inscription in English: 'WEST AFRIKAN CAMPAING', translated as 'West African Campaign'. To the right, against the sea background, is an image of a military award, above it a two-line inscription in English: 'WORLD WAR II VICTORY MEDAL', translated as 'Victory Medal for World War II'. Along the upper edge arc is the name of the war in English: 'WORLD WAR II'. Along the lower edge arc is the inscription: '$1' - one dollar.
Obverse
The central part features the coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia. To its left is the number '19', to the right '97' - the year of mintage 1997. In the upper part, along the edge arc of the coin, is the name of the country, Republic of Liberia, in English: 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA'. In the lower part, along the edge arc of the coin, separated by dots, is an inscription in English: '1 DOLLAR' - one dollar. The coin's edge features decorative elements in the form of denticles.
