    The central part features the coat of arms of the Belgian Congo. The coat of arms consists of a shield. Within it is a smaller shield bearing a heraldic lion facing left. The lower part of the large shield is hatched with horizontal lines. In the upper part, hatched with horizontal lines, is a five-pointed star. Above is a crown, symbolizing the authority of the Belgian rulers. On the left, the large shield is supported by a stylized figure of a lion, its head facing left. On the right is a lion figure, its head facing right. The lions stand with their hind paws on ornamental lines depicted as heraldic elements. Below is an ornamental ribbon bearing the inscription: "TRAVAIL ET PROGRES", which translates from French as "Work and Progress". Along the upper edge in an arc is the French inscription "5 francs". Along the lower edge of the coin in an arc are the digits "1894", indicating the year of issue. The coin's edge features decorative elements in the form of denticles.
