  • Obverse
On the left, top, and right is the name of the state in French 'REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN' (Republic of Benin). In the center is the country's coat of arms. It features a quarterly heraldic shield: the upper left quarter contains a castle, the upper right the Star of Benin, the lower left a palm tree, and the lower right a sailing ship. The shield is supported by leopards and is topped by a crest consisting of two twisted cornucopias filled with grain and sand. At the base of the arms is the motto - 'Fraternity, Justice, Labor' (Fraternité, Justice, Travail). In the lower part, along the rim of the coin, is a two-line inscription in French – '1000 FRANS CFA' (1000 CFA Francs).
