    In the central part, against a background of a natural habitat, two zebras are depicted: one facing right, with its head lowered grazing on grass, the second facing left. Along the upper edge of the coin is the French inscription 'ESPECES EN DANGER' (Endangered Species), below is the name of the subgenus of the horse genus 'ZEBRE' (Zebra). To the right is the year of issue '2001'.
  • Obverse
    On the left, top, and right is the name of the state in French 'REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN' (Republic of Benin). In the central part is the country's coat of arms. It features a quarterly heraldic shield: the upper left quarter contains a castle, the upper right quarter contains the Star of Benin, the lower left quarter contains a palm tree, and the lower right quarter contains a sailing ship. The shield is supported by leopards and is topped by a crest consisting of two twisted cornucopias filled with grain and sand. At the base of the coat of arms is the motto - 'Fraternity, Justice, Labor' (Fraternité, Justice, Travail). In the lower part, along the edge of the coin, is a two-line inscription in French – '1000 FRANS CFA' (1000 CFA Francs).
