Reverse
The central part features the lesser coat of arms of the Austrian Empire. It depicts a double-headed eagle with spread wings, its heads crowned, above them the Crown of Saint Stephen. In its right talon are a sword and scepter, in its left an orb. On its chest is the familial heraldic shield of Habsburg-Lorraine, encircled by a chain. Along the edge of the coin are Latin inscriptions in an arc: to the right and left 'HVNGAR∙BOHEM∙GAL∙LOD∙ILL∙REX A∙A∙1872' (King of Hungary, Bohemia, Galicia, Lodomeria, Illyria, Archduke of Austria 1872), at the bottom – '1/4 FL' (1/4 Florin). The coin's rim is decorated with raised dots.
Obverse
The center features the right-facing profile of Emperor of the Austrian Empire, King of Bohemia, Franz Joseph I, crowned with a laurel wreath with a ribbon forming a bow. An arc of text along the coin's edge reads in Latin: 'FRANC∙IOS∙I∙D∙G∙AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR' (Franz Joseph I, by the Grace of God, Emperor of Austria). The coin's rim is decorated with raised dots.
