    Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right is the English text 'EAST AFRICA'. In the central part is an image of a lion against a prairie background, enclosed within a relief, unclosed circle with scrollwork at the bottom. Below it is the numeral 50. To the left, below, and to the right along the rim is the inscription 'FIFTY CENTS HALF SHILLING'. The phrase is split into two parts by the date '1943' – the year of issue. The circumference features denticles.
  • Obverse
    In the central part of the coin is struck the left-facing profile of King George VI. Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right is the text 'GEORGIVS VI REX ET INDIA IMPERATOR', which translates from Latin as 'George VI, King and Emperor of India'. The circumference along the rim features decorative raised denticles.
