    The central part depicts a torchbearer wearing a barretina – the symbol of the Catalonia region – carrying the Olympic Flame. The flame leaves a trail in the shape of the Olympic Rings. Beneath his feet are the three ships of Christopher Columbus on waves, symbolizing the New World. To the left of the torchbearer are the inscription 'L. 1000' – '1000 lire', and the mintmark of the Rome Mint 'R'. Along the left edge of the coin is the inscription 'OLIMPIADE 1992' in Italian. To the right and below are the engravers' marks 'BANDOLI' and 'E.L. FRAPICCINI INC.'.
