To the right and bottom along the rim is the name of the statesman and military commander João de Castro (Port. D. JOÃO DE CASTRO). In the central part is his portrait facing right, with the coat of arms of his family to his right. At chest level, he holds a sword point-down in his left hand and a quill pen in his right. On the left is the mintmark of the Portuguese Mint and the artist's signature 'INCM - A. VIDIGAL.'

At the top is the middle coat of arms of Portugal: on an armillary sphere, a heraldic shield with five small shields in the form of a cross and seven castles.
