    In the central part, within a raised circle, a lion walking to the right against a background of mountains is depicted. Along the edge of the coin are inscriptions in English: at the top 'EAST AFRICA'; at the bottom, in three lines - '1 SHILLING 1937'. The rim is decorated with decorative denticles.

    In the central part is the left-facing profile of King George VI of Great Britain. Along the edge of the coin runs the Latin text 'GEORGIVS VI REX ET INDIÆ IMPERATOR:', which translates to 'GEORGE VI KING AND EMPEROR OF INDIA'. Below the truncation of the monarch's neck is the designer's mark of the British medallist 'PM' - Percy Metcalfe. The rim features decorative raised denticles.
