Below is the letter "J" - the mint mark. To the left and right are stylized images of palm branches, tied together at the bottom with a wide ribbon. Along the upper edge, from left to right, is an inscription in German "DEUTSCH OSTAFRIKA", translated as "German East Africa". Along the coin's edge are decorative elements in the form of dots.

    In the central part, the left-facing profile of German Emperor Wilhelm II wearing a helmet topped with an eagle facing left, and in the military uniform of the time, with epaulettes. Along the rim, to the left and right, is a Latin inscription "GUILELMUS II IMPERATOR", which translates as "Wilhelm II Emperor". Along the coin's edge are decorative raised dots.
