    Along the upper edge of the coin is the text 'ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON'. Below is 'TUSITALA' — Tusitala, meaning 'teller of tales' in Samoan. The inscriptions are separated by two five-petaled rosettes. In the central part is a profile depiction of Stevenson at work with paper and pen. To the left, at head level, are two lines of text: 'EDINBURGH ★1858' — Edinburgh 1858, the writer's place and year of birth; 'VAILIMA ✢1894' — Vailima 1894, the name of the Samoan village where the writer died and the year of death.

    Along the edge of the coin in the upper part is the inscription 'SAMOA I SISIFO' — Samoa i Sisifo or Western Samoa. Below, '$1' signifies '1 tala'. In the central part is the year of issue '1969'. Below it is the coat of arms of Samoa: on a stretched hide are a coconut palm, ocean waves, and 5 stars representing a stylized depiction of the Southern Cross constellation. Above the shield is a Latin cross with rays. Olive branches are placed on either side. In the lower part of the coat of arms is the motto: 'FA’AVAE I LE ATUA SAMOA' which translates from Samoan as 'God is the Foundation of Samoa'.
