Reverse
In the central part, the coat of arms of the state of Botswana. It consists of a traditional shield depicting: in the upper part three cogwheels, in the central part three waves, in the lower part a bull's head. At the base is the motto with the inscription "Pula" (in Setswana "Rain"), on both sides of the shield zebras: the zebra on the right holds a sorghum stalk, the zebra on the left holds an elephant tusk. Below the coat of arms is the Latin letter "B". Along the rim of the coin are inscriptions in English: at the top "INDEPENDENCE 30 SEPTEMBER 1966", at the bottom the inscription "50 CENTS".
Obverse
In the center is the left-facing profile of the first President of Botswana, Sir Seretse Goitsebeng Maphiri Khama. Below the truncation is the artist's name "J.H. Waser". Along the rim are inscriptions in Setswana: at the top the country name "BOTSWANA", at the bottom the president's name "SERETSE KHAMA", to the left and right three five-pointed stars each.
