Obverse
Along the arc of the coin's edge on the right side, a Latin inscription 'JOANNES. D. G. PORT. ET ALG P REGENS', which translates to 'John, by the Grace of God, Prince Regent of Portugal and the Algarves'. In the central part, the coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield crowned with an imperial crown. In the center of the shield, arranged in the shape of a cross, are five smaller shields, each with five bezants. The border of the large shield features seven castles. At the level of the shield's center, arranged vertically: on the left, the numerals '4000' between two dots; on the right — three four-petaled rosettes between two dots above and below.
