The central part features a stylized, multi-level architectural structure in the form of a medieval stone building with pointed roofs, stained-glass windows, and columns. It is adjoined by other, lower buildings with windows, attics, arches, and chimneys for stove heating protruding from the roofs. Below it is a two-line inscription in German: "750 JAHRE KATHARININENKLOSTER, 50 JAHRE MEERES MUSEUM", which translates to "750 YEARS OF THE CATHERINE MONASTERY, 50 YEARS OF THE MARITIME MUSEUM". Below that is the skeleton of a fossilized animal. Along the arc of the lower edge is the inscription "STRALSUND" - "Stralsund", the name of the city in Germany.
  • Obverse
The central part features a relief image of the coat of arms of Germany (FRG) - an eagle facing left. To the right of the eagle's claw is the letter "A", which is the mint mark. Along the rim, from left to right, is an inscription in German, separated by a dot before the numbers: "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND. 2001", which translates to "Federal Republic of Germany. 2001". The numbers "2001" indicate the year of issue. At the bottom is a two-line inscription in German: "10 DEUTSCHE MARK" - 10 German marks.
