The imperial crown is located in the upper part of the coin. Below it, an inscription in four lines reads: ЧИСТАГО СЕРЕБРА 4 ЗОЛОТН. 21 ДОЛЯ (Pure Silver 4 Zolotniks 21 Dolya). Beneath it is a straight line and the designation "S.P.B." (Saint Petersburg Mint). Along the edge on the left is a laurel branch, and on the right an oak branch. The branches are tied together at the bottom with a ribbon. The edge of the coin is stamped with relief denticles.

In the central part is the State Emblem of the Russian Empire—a double-headed eagle with wings spread and lowered. Above the eagle's heads is the imperial crown. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow—a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the right). The eagle holds thunderbolts and a torch in its right talon and a laurel wreath in its left, all entwined with the ribbon of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. Below the ribbon are the letters: "H" on the left and "Г" on the right. These are the initials of mintmaster Nikolai Grachev. Above the eagle is the denomination designation—the circular inscription "МОНЕТА РУБЛЬ." (COIN RUBLE) separated by a six-pointed star. Below the eagle is the year of minting "1831 ГОДА." (YEAR). The rim is decorated with short denticles.
