    In the central part, within a raised circle, a lion walking to the right against a background of mountains is depicted; below – the numeral 50. Along the edge of the coin are inscriptions in English: at the top 'EAST AFRICA'; on the left, bottom, and right 'FIFTY CENTS 1942 HALF SHILLING'. The rim is decorated with decorative denticles.
  • Obverse
    In the central part is the left-facing profile of King George VI of Great Britain. Along the edge of the coin runs the Latin text 'GEORGIVS VI REX ET INDIÆ IMPERATOR:', which translates to 'GEORGE VI KING AND EMPEROR OF INDIA'. Below the truncation of the monarch's neck is the privy mark 'PM' of the British medallist Percy Metcalfe. The rim features decorative raised denticles.
