    In the central part, a lion is depicted facing left, looking straight ahead, standing on ground, holding a staff with a flag in its front left paw. A crown is on its head. Below the ground: on the left a cornucopia, the mark of the Paris Mint; in the center the artist's name 'LAGRANGE'; below it the letter designation 'A' for the mint; on the right the mark of the chief engraver Jean Lagrange – fasces. Along the edge of the coin, inscriptions in Amharic from left to right: 'ሞዓ፡ አንበሳ፡ ዘእምነገደ፡ ይሁዳ።', below 'የብር ፡ ሩብ'. The edge is decorated with decorative denticles.

    In the center is the right-facing profile of the 80th Emperor of Ethiopia, Sahle Maryam. Along the rim are inscriptions in Amharic: on the left and right the name and title of the ruler 'ዳግማዊ፡ ምኒልክ ንጉሠ፡ነገሥት፡ዘኢትዮጵያ።' (Emperor Menelik, King of Kings of Ethiopia), below the minting year '፲፰፻፹፯' (1897). Along the rim are denticle-like elements.
