    In the central part, within a raised circle, is a stylized symbol of the United Nations for the observance of the "International Year of Older Persons". Above the symbol is the inscription 'AUSTRALIA 1999', below it '1 DOLLAR'. Along the edge of the coin, in an arc: at the top – 'towards a society for all ages', at the bottom – 'International Year of Older Persons'. All inscriptions are in English.

    In the central part is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. Below the neck truncation is the sculptor's initials 'IRB' - Ian Rank-Broadley. On the left side, along the edge of the coin in an arc, is the Queen's name in English 'ELIZABETH II', on the right the name of the independent state and the year of mintage - 'AUSTRALIA 1999'.
