To the left, top, and right is the name of the state 'Republic of Benin' in French 'REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN'. In the central part is the country's coat of arms. It features a quarterly heraldic shield: in the upper left quarter a castle, upper right the Star of Benin, lower left a palm tree, lower right a sailing ship. The shield is supported by leopards. It is topped by a crest consisting of two twisted horns filled with grain and sand. At the base of the coat of arms is the motto - 'Fraternity, Justice, Labor' (Fr. Fraternité, Justice, Travail). In the lower part, along the curved edge of the coin, is a two-line inscription for one thousand CFA francs in French '1000 FRANCS CFA'.
